Challenge: We tried to recreate a sushi box

If the shopping challenge was difficult for us, this one is right outside our comfort zone too: Recreating a sushi box that we bought from a home delivery service.

The sushi box we tried to recreate

We ended up choosing the HSS menu (13€) from the H0me Sweet Sushi, with 18 pieces,  and a salmon Temaki (4,5€). This is one of the first take-away sushi services in Portugal, so we decided to give it a go! We ordered everything from their website, where you can follow your order status, since its started preparing until its delivered. Concerning the payment, it can be done through online or in cash. And you have the option to choose what time you want your sushi to be delivered (and by the way, they were on time!)

TOTAL: 17,50€

The process

The process of recreating the box was a lot more complicated. First, we had to buy all the necessary ingredients, which we list below, and second, we spent almost an entire afternoon in the kitchen so that the final result was presentable and similar to the box we bought.

The shopping list

Fresh salmon

Sushi Meal Kit (2x rice, 2x sticks, 2x soy sauce, wasabi, vinagre, 4 seaweed sheets, rolling mat)

Mango

Chives

Kikoman soy sauce

Philadelphia cheese

Sweet and Sour sauce

TOTAL: 27€

Step by Step

#1

Don’t be like us. Prepare the rice and let it cool down before starting to roll it. For each bag of rice, you put one cup of water. And you don’t need to season, because with this sushi kit meal the vinagre comes already prepared to put in the rice.

#2

Cut the salmon and mango in slices.

#3

Put  aseaweed sheets in the rolling mat, with the harsh part facing up. Put a rice ball on the size of an orange on top and spread it throughout half the sheet. Choose the filling of your sushi and place it on top of the rice, right in the centre. Our favorites are salmon, mango and philadelphia cheese.

#4

With the rolling mat, roll the sheet little by little, pressuring with your fingers until its a full roll. Cut it in to pieces with a long and sharp knife.

#5

Lastly, let your imagination run wild and decor the plate as you want!

And if you’re a sweet and sour fan, you have to try this sauce!

So, how do you think we did? Is it similar? It might not look the prettiest box in the world, but we make up in flavor, we can guarantee! eheh If you want to see a video with all these steps just click in the image below!
