Whenever we get the chance to be creative, we take it! Wether it is a planned costume or made a few hours before going out, what matters the most is having fun!
We like Halloween better than Carnival, so we take it very seriously and try, even if it is last minute, to do a cool costume and walk down the streets of Porto like we’re in America doing trick or treat.
This year we decided to leave it to last minute, so we haven’t decided what our costumes will be. However, here are some suggestions (some simple, some complex) of previous costumes we did, in case you haven’t decided what to do this year too. Some were done last minute, meaning 2/3 hours before leaving to the streets, and some we planned and worked on them for a few days.
Done last minute
If you’re thinking of going out tomorrow then you don’t have much time to figure your costume out. Here are three ideas that you can use and be ready on record time:
Serial Killers Prom King and Queen – Costume with partner
There are so many possibilities in case you want to go as a pair. From Grease to the dance girls emoji, spies or even mimes, there is plenty to choose from! These are costumes that you can do with your own clothes, and all you need to buy are some cool accessories and fake blood to make a great Halloween costume.
We ended up choosing to be Prom King and Queen, serial killer version. (Quick storyline: These guys wanted to win the titles so badly that they murdered all students to get the crowns eheh). To make this costume we only needed to buy some accessories: crowns, knife/hammer, the sash and of course, the blood. Our inspiration came from a brainstorm session.
Skulls – Makeup
If you really don’t know what to do, and you already got a message from your friends saying “we’re on our way”, then this is your best option. It’s fairly quick makeup and you don’t need a lot of material. Below you can see the photo that inspired us, and our result (done in a hurry, in less than 1h!).

Sims – DIY
This mask was super well received on the streets of Porto. If you’re a big group and don’t know what to do, run fast to a store and purchase: green glitter cardboard, wire, a green headband and a glue gun. Below is the video that helped us make this Sims plumbob. We decided to go as Rockabilly Sims (which is basically an excuse so we could go out comfortable with our leather jackets eheh).

Done with time
Masquerade
This one seems super tricky and difficult to do, right? Can you believe that this was really simple to recreate? Go to a costume store and purchase a white mask, latex and blood. Follow all the steps in the video below and you end up with a mask that looks like it took you several hours to do, bu actually only took 1 or 2 hours.

Mad Max
This costume is basically our everyday style, but on steroids: skinny Jeans, leather jacket and black clothes. But the trick to make this work is in the accessories. In order to make this look truly Mad Max, all accessories were made and designed with time. Starting with the shoulder pads made from sawn in half working hats, kitchen tubes painted in shiny silver, all the way to the black painted mask and glasses. Every accessory was costume made and well though out.

Male Poison Ivy
If you are patient and have a mask that you’ve always wanted to do, gather all the materials you need and get ready to glue your fingers together, because the glue gun is going to be your best and worst friend for these projects. To make this idea come to reality, old clothes were used as a base, then all the fake leaves were glued on to them. Then a cape was made using green fabric, also with leaves glued. In the face, all that was used was latex and fake blood (similar to the masquerade costume). To give this outfit an extra touch, some hair extensions were put in to the real hair. A true hassle … but worthy of a Halloween party like Heidi Klum’s.

And to finish off this post, here is a group photo of our friends from Halloween of 2017. Each one of them with a different and super creative costume. Maybe you can get more ideas from this photo!

And you?
Do you have your costume ready? Or is it going to be done last minute? (like us)
